Drust is the current programme leader for the Doctorate in Sport and Exercise Science at the University of Birmingham. An applied exercise physiologist with a particular interest in intermittent exercise and the sport of football, he is recognised internationally for his research in the area of football performance and player preparation.

Since 2019, Drust has supported the development of knowledge and skills related to sport science and medicine at Rangers FC. Prior to that, he has completed similar projects with both Liverpool FC and The FA, supporting the development of their sports science strategy and helping co-ordinate the department’s research.
