Ben Mackenzie Joins Zone7 as Data Research Analyst

Zone7 has appointed experienced sports scientist turned data scientist, Ben Mackenzie, as a Data Research Analyst to support the company’s rapid expansion across professional sports.

PALO ALTO, CA., July 26, 2022 — Zone7, the AI-driven human performance platform, has appointed Ben Mackenzie as a Data Research Analyst to support the company’s rapid expansion across professional sports while continuing to deliver best-in-market service.

Mackenzie, who spent 16 years working within professional football as a sports scientist, retrained as a software engineer and data scientist in 2019, having completed vocational qualifications in full stack development and in software engineering. In his new role, Mackenzie will be responsible for cross-examining Zone7’s one-of-a-kind data lake to find insights that empower clients and deliver value for practitioners across the industry.

“I’m thrilled to join Zone7, a company that recognizes the importance of data science as well as the positive impact artificial intelligence can have for organizations across all levels of sports,” said Mackenzie. “Having seen first-hand the proliferation of performance and medical data in professional football, this was a career decision that made perfect sense. I look forward to interpreting and applying the insights derived from Zone7’s work with clients and unparalleled lake of reference data.”

Prior to joining Zone7, Mackenzie held various positions related to athlete optimization, including Head of Physical Performance at Peterborough United, Head of Science & Fitness at Bristol City, and Physical Performance Coach for the English Football Association. Most recently, Mackenzie worked as an Apprentice Software Engineer at Microlise, a leading logistics company.

“As more organizations engage Zone7 to learn about the platform’s capabilities and utilise its capabilities against their own data, Ben will be a tremendous addition to our team,” said Rich Buchanan, Performance Director at Zone7. “His unique domain experience, hybrid skillset, and ability to generate insights for multi-disciplinary teams will only accelerate Zone7’s growth as we help organizations unlock the full potential of data science for injury prevention.”

Mackenzie’s arrival is the latest example of professional sports leaders recognizing Zone7’s potential to forecast injury risk. Conall Murtagh, First-Team Fitness Coach at Liverpool recently spoke to the Leaders Performance Institute about his work with Zone7, which resulted in a two-year contract extension with the Premier League, as well as expansion to its women’s and under 23 teams.
