In response to COVID-19, the Scottish Professional Football League (SPFL) curtailed the 2019/20 season on March 18th. Rangers were one of the teams affected by that change, finishing the truncated season in second place.
Determined to go one better the following season, and having completed a successful retrospective analysis of Zone7, Rangers’ Head of Performance Jordan Milsom adopted the platform for live use from the start of the 2020/21 season.
Milsom recognised that keeping Steven Gerrard’s squad as fit as possible would be essential to reclaiming the SPFL title. This insight proved true, with Rangers’ 52% reduction in injuries from the prior season contributing to a convincing 25-point margin of victory.
While Zone7 was certainly a valuable weapon in their arsenal, the success is all Rangers’ as the collaboration with Milsom and his staff was crucial.
As a valuable weapon in the arsenal of Milsom and his staff, Zone7 mitigated injury risk by empowering professional decision makers overseeing athlete workload management. The Zone7 product functions best when used by performance and medical staff who are already collecting data on their players regularly.
Milsom said of working with Zone7: “All of our GPS and heart rate load training data from sessions and games is uploaded automatically into the Zone7 system. The platform digests this, performs its modelling and provides us with risk alerts each day for players.
“I believe AI, coupled with the experience levels of those using it, will eventually become a bedrock within clubs’ decision-making as data and technology advances.”
